Die Philosophische Audiothek<\/a> wird seit mehreren Jahren auf einer Plattform betrieben, die unter dem Titel “Mediacore” als ein open source Projekt begonnen hat. Vor drei Jahren kam es zu einer Reorganisation. “Mediacore” wurde zu einem kommerziell angelegten Cloud-Unternehmen, w\u00e4hrend der aktuelle Stand der Entwicklung als Mediadrop<\/a> zu einem “community project” abgezweigt wurde.<\/p>\n

Weder das gesch\u00e4ftliche Unternehmen, noch der open source Ableger waren sonderlich erfolgreich, obwohl die Plattform durchaus gute Dienste leistet. Die Botschaft kam also nicht ganz \u00fcberraschend:<\/p>\n

Dieses S\u00fcssholzraspeln verspricht nichts Gutes. “Workday is an on\u2011demand financial management and human capital management software vendor based in California.” [1]<\/a>. “Workday, which has a market cap of about $14 billion US and annual revenues of about $1 billion, is a growing competitor to database giant Oracle.” [2]<\/a> So l\u00e4uft das eben, man muss sich nicht beklagen.<\/p>\n

Der Ablauf enth\u00e4lt allerdings eine Lehre f\u00fcr den Umgang mit open source Software. Die schlechte Nachricht zuerst:<\/p>\n

\nI\u2019m reaching out to let you know that MediaCore has recently been acquired by Workday. The team at Workday shares our vision and enthusiasm for innovation in education. Together we will be building exciting new products that transform the way we learn.<\/p>\n

Workday has decided it will not continue developing the MediaCore video platform in its current form and will close all live MediaCore accounts.<\/p>\n

As a result, your free account on the MediaCore platform will be closed January 31st, 2016. We will continue to support you until then, but after this date, your MediaCore service will be discontinued.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Das heisst, dass alle Arbeit, die in den vergangenen drei Jahren in den Aufbau einer Webpr\u00e4senz \u00fcber Mediacore investiert wurde, durch eine Firmen\u00fcbernahme wertlos geworden ist. Die blanken Daten lassen sich exportieren, aber was tut man mit den massgefertigten Einbaum\u00f6beln, wenn das Haus verkauft wird?<\/p>\n

Die gute Nachricht ist, dass Mediadrop ungest\u00f6rt funktioniert. Das hei\u00dft, wenn man sich nicht vor drei Jahren dazu \u00fcberreden lie\u00df, den Umstieg auf die Cloud (“freier Account”) mitzumachen. Es ist eine gewisse Befriedigung, nicht zum Spielball der \u00dcbernahmepolitik US-amerikanischer Firmen geworden zu sein. Beklemmung ist auch dabei. Der Vorfall zeigt, dass man auf diesem Gebiet mit dem Feuer spielt. <\/p>\n
