Austrian universities have been pushed into uncharted territory and it is far from certain whether the legislative framework which has been forced upon them will permit them to maintain their status as academic communities this side of unmitigated market forces. This is, perhaps, asking too much and, in that case, a more cynical assessment seems appropriate. Clearing away institutional memory is welcome, regardless of the quality of the new regime ? as long as the process is repeated in regular intervals.
